Genesis - "Three Sides Live" - Reconstructed Original Project.

In December 1981, Genesis wrapped their four-month tour of Europe and North America to support the release of their eleventh studio album: "Abacab".
During the first months of 1982 the group selected recorded material during this tour for a new work. The result ,the third live album released as a double lp on 4 June 1982, on Charisma Records in the United Kingdom and by Atlantic Records in the United States; with a movie, wich was released on Betamax and VHS sistems.
This is a reconstruction of how this project was initially conceived to make it coincide with the content of the film.

"Abacab" was released on 18 September 1981 by Charisma Records, after their 1980 "Duke" World Tour. The album recorded at The Farm, a studio bought by the group in Chiddingfold, Surrey. The recording sessions were brief but very profitable; it began in May and ended shortly after in June. It was a commercial success for the band, reaching No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 7 on the US Billboard 200.

The Abacab Tour was a European and North American concert tour, that began in September 25 1981 in Barcelona “Plaza de Toros – La Monumental” and ended with four shows in Birmingham,England at Resorts World Arena, the last one in December 23 1981. A short world tour but very, very intensive with 65 shows, practically one daily. The pace of work of the group was very intense, partly to forget the disastrous private life that the members of the band were going through, with divorces, separations and economic problems and health problems.

The tour also marked the first appearance of the Vari-Lite automated lighting system. It was filmed by Stuart Orme and a movie was made with songs from two shows:  28 and 29 November 1981 at the Savoy Theatreand Nassau Coliseum, New York, respectively, but Some of the featured songs are incomplete due to editing. At the same time an live album was made following of the film sequence, Bit.ly/Gen3sl81 but adding a concert more recorded at National Exhibition Center. Birmingham, England on 23 December 1981 being as follows:

Side A: (19:11)
1.Behind The Lines. (5:28)
2.Duchess. (6:24)
3.Dodo / Lurker. (7:17)

Side B: (18:44)
4.Abacab. (8:42)
5.Me & Sarah Jane. (6:00)
6.Misunderstanding. (4:01)

Side C: (20:28)
7.No Reply At All. (4:50)
8.Man On The Corner. (3:45)
9.In The Cage Medley. (11:51)
"In the Cage" "The Cinema Show" "The Colony Of Slippermen"

Side D: (19:17)
10.Afterglow. (4:45)
11.Turn It Again. (5:12)
12.I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe). (9:20)

1,2 & 11 - at Nassau Coliseum. Uniondale, New York on 29 November 1981.
3,4,5,9,10 & 12 - at National Exhibition Centre. Birmingham, England on 23 December 1981.
6,7 & 8 -  at Savoy Theatre. New York City, New York on 28 November 1981.

The project was later altered to make it more commercial, changing the original positions of the songs..There´s two versions: with “Evidence of autumn” and “Open Door” outtakes from “Duke”; and “Paperlate", "You Might Recall", and "Me & Virgil", outtakes from “Abacab”, with “ were included on the North American edition and other with: “One For The Wine”, “Fountain of Salmacis” and “"it."/"Watcher of the Skies”, recorded on tour between 1976 and 1980.

Some of the songs from the original project that were rejected as: “Man On The Corner” or “No Reply At All” were included years later in Genesis Archive 2: 1976-92”. .Others are yet to be published: “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)”. And it's a shame that this last song was left out, because the interaction that takes place with the audience makes it perhaps one of the best songs on the tour.
Even so, "Three Sides Live" reception was a commercial success, peaking at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 10 on the US Billboard 200, where it sold 500,000 copies.

Ok!.., That´s all, see you soon, If you want, with more and better, I hope.

Joni Mitchell - "Blue" - Early Version. March 1971.

We continue with another great album of the early seventies: "Blue", the fourth studio lp by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. Released by Reprise Records on June 22 1971. It was  number 3 on the UK Albums Chart, 9 in Canada and 15 on the Blllboard 200. Regarded by music critics as one of the greatest albums of all time made by a woman
Here´s the less known version, from March 1971, shortly before being restructured as we know it today.
January 1970, Joni Mitchell make a decision to break from performing. A few months later, she set off on a vacation around Europe. While staying on the island of Crete and Malta she wrote some of the songs that appear on Blue, as:“Carey”;“California”;“My Old Man” or “River”. Songs inspired in old sentimental relationships that she had with David Crosby and in those moments with Graham Nash and shortly after with James Taylor.

When she returned to the United States from Spain ended the relationship with Graham Nash but because she had begun another with James Taylor. Joni Mitchell was accused, on more than one occasion, of using personal relationships to promote her musical career, as had happened with David Crosby in the past; thanks to him she got Reprise Records interested in his music. behind the sweetness and innocence appearance, there was always an interested woman., true or not?, what do you think?.

Good.., we continue with this quick story. This new work start it to record on january 1971 at A&M Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles C.A  and finalize in March, the same month when James Taylor broke off the relationship with her. This personal disappointment caused that Joni to change the line-up of the álbum. Bit.ly/71JMbl Next the original “Blue”

Side One: (16:38)
1.Carey.(3:03)
2.Little Green.(3:27)
3.A Case Of You.(4:23)
4.Hunter.(2:38)
5.Blue.(3:04)

Side B. 19:26)
1.California.(3:49)
2.My Old Man.(3:34)
3.Urge For Going.(5:05)
4.This Flight Tonight.(2:52)
5.River.(4:04)

There were three old songs that had not found their way onto any of her previous albums. At the last minute, Mitchell decided to remove two of the three so that she could add the new songs:"Urge for Going" was rejected by "All I Want" and “Hunter” (The Good Samaritan) by "The Last Time I Saw Richard". Leaving the album as follows:

Side One: (16:30)
1.All I Want.(3:32)
2.My Old Man.(3:33)
3.Little Green.(3:25)
4.Carey.(3:00)
5.Blue.(3:00)

Side:B. (18:31)
1.California.(3:48)
2.This Flight Tonight.(2:50)
3.River..(4:00)
4.A Case Of You.(4:20)
5.The Last Time I Saw Richard.(4:13)

All songs written by Joni Mitchell, but on the disc there was also the shadow of the plagiarism, when it was said that the singer had included part of "Jingle Bells" in "River". "Blue" was about to be retired and the song "River" replaced in futures editions  by one of the other two themes that Joni had eliminated in March. Everything was solved between lawyers with an economic agreement and recognizing that it had been done in an innocent way, because since the original song was released in 1857, it was believed that the copyright had expired.

This work is short, maybe Joni Mitchell should have been more generous and have kept all the selected songs better because there was space on the album.or maybe not, possibly that's why it's so good in itself. The content of it is so explicit that even Kris Kristofferson when he heard an advance copy of it said to she: "Joni! Keep something of yourself!".

The title was "Blues", but the art director: Gary Burden changed it by the name of the color,.when he was commissioned to design the cover. Two singles were extracted from the álbum: “Carey” / “This Flight tonight  & “California” / “A Case Of You”.

It was discontinued in U.S in 1977 and did not return to the catalog until 1990 in which it was released on CD, although it was Canada who took the honors by releasing it in digital format three years before.
That´s all friends. Enjoy it.

Paul McCartney: "Return To Pepperland" - (Unreleased 1987/88 double album) - (2nd version & definitive).

“Return to Pepperland“ was a cancelled Paul McCartney album, originally scheduled to be released in late 1987.
Officially the recording sessions for this project, inspired by the 20th anniversary of Sgt.Pepper's album, began in June at Hogg Hill Mill studios in Sussex, England with Phil Ramone as a producer. Although some songs had already been recorded previously during “Once Upon A long Ago” sessions March/April 1987, others came out from the Paul´s archives, home demos and outtakes recorded shortly before the release of the soundtrack: ”Give my regards to Broad St.” in October 22.1984 and "Press To Play" Era.

The most interesting part of this project was going to be the collaboration of Freddie Mercury and possibly Queen, at least in one of the themes: "Once Upon A Long Ago", a duet between Freddie and Paul, as he had done in the past for example with Michael Jackson. But the agenda Queen´s singer prevented it and it was not possible something that saddened quite to Paul McCartney.
At the beginning of July 1987 a first compilation of the album was made with this provisional setlist: 1.Once Upon A long Ago.-  2..Lindiana. - 3.I love this house.-  4.We Got Married. - 5.Beautiful Night. -  6.Loveliest Thing. -  7.Squid. - 8.Big Day. - 9.This One. - 10.Love Come Tumbling Down. - 11.Christian Pop. - 12.Atlantic Ocean. - 13.Love Mix. - 14.P.S.Love Me Do. - 15.Back On My Feet. - 16.Return To Pepperland.
In addition to selecting a single formed by the song "Once Upon A Long Ago / Back On My Feat.",that would should go on sale like anticipation of the album at the end of summer. In July overdubs were add to this song with George Martin on production and Abbey Road as new location. The album, bit.ly/87PMPP it was produced by Paul McCartney and Phil Ramone.
In September, after listen “Once Upon A Long Ago” final mix, Paul considered that some of the songs from “Return to Pepperland”, could probably be improved with a simple re-mix, but others needed to re-record again. and delayed its publication to improve it and thus avoid bad reviews. He still had in mind the cold reviews received for his previous album "Press To Play"" and he did not want to repeat the story.
Paul took an extra time to improve the project; but as the release of a new album was already signed, one year without lp, since “Press To Play”, to avoid economic losses to the production company; “Return to Pepperland" was changed by another valid alternative, a double album called: "All the best", Although the single "Once Upon A Long Ago / Back On My Feat." remained; and it would be released fifteen days before of “All the best” album, on November 2.
Meanwhile, Paul continued to restructure "Return to Pepperland" and selecting new themes. So, between December 21 and January 21 the project was re-built, with more sessions and songs as:”Rough Ride” or “Figure of Eight”. The new album version was compiled on January 21.1988 with this final line-up:
Side A: (18:17)
1. Return To Pepperland. (Remixed). (4:47)
2. Love Come Tumbling Down. (4:21)
3. Christian Pop. (2:19)
4. Atlantic Ocean. (6:48)
Track 1: June 2-30 1987. Hogg Hill Mill studio,Sussex, England. Track 2: March 1987 Hogg Hill Mill studio,Sussex, England. with additional recording: June 2-30 1987. Track 3 & 4: March 1987. Hogg Hill Mill studios in Sussex, England.
Side B: (18:09)
5. Lindiana. (Remixed). (5:44)
6.I Love This House. (3:47)
7. We Got Married. (1st version). (Remixed). (3:54)
8. Rough Ride. (1st version). (Remixed). (4:42)
Tracks 5, 6 & 7: Sep. to Dec. 10 1984. Hogg Hill Mill studios, Sussex, England. Track 8: Dec´87 & Jan´88. Hogg Hill Mill studios, Sussex, England.
Side C: (17:50)
9. Figure Of Eight. (1st version). (Remixed). (5:09)

12. Beautiful Night. (1st version). (6:08)
Track 9: Dec´87 & Jan´88. Hogg Hill Mill studios, Sussex, England. Tracks 10 & 11: Dec´1986. Hogg Hill Mill studios, Sussex, England. Tracks 12 & 13: Power Station Studios. N.Y. US. August 1986; with additional recordings June 1987. Hogg Hill Mill studios, Sussex, England.
Side D: (17:51)
13. Loveliest Thing. (3:53)
14. Love Mix. (3:54)
15. Peacocks. (6:46)
16. This One. (Demo). (3:25)
Track 14:  April 1987. Hogg Hill Mill studios, Sussex, England. Track 15: March 1987. Hogg Hill Mill studios in Sussex, England. Track 16: Feb..2.1987, Audio International Studios, London, England.
But the result did not end either of convince to Paul and after a brief rest and reflection, in April of 1988, he abandoned the project definitively and began the recording sessions of what would be his next studio album: "Flowers in the dirt". Many of the songs from “Return to Pepperland” came out as B-sides or were included in their next works as “Flaming Pie”.
Ok, that´s all friends. See you soon with more and better.

Eric Clapton: "Eric Clapton & His Band Live!" - (Unreleased 1987 live album) - Final Mix.

Here´s another special recording. An unreleased live album from Eric Clapton and his band, scheduled to be release in late November 1987.
The singular thing of this recording with respect others, is that it is the final mix and not the "work in progress tape". It has been difficult to find this master tape but here you have it as clean as possible. That's why I took a few more days. But the important thing is that here you have it, with artwork included.
On July 3rd1986, after finish the recording sessions from his new album: “August”, Eric Clapton started in Norway a new world tour with his Band: Greg Phillinganes (keyboards); Nathan East (bass) and Phil Collins on drums and vocals, with the support: Roger Craig Band. Nevertheless, the content of the disc was recorded during 1987 at the beginning of January in London at the Royal Albert Hall during three nights: 10,11 and 12;. and in the American tour that began on April 11 at  the Oakland Coliseum and concluded in New York on April 27 at Madison Square Garden. Of this last show and the previous at the Civic Center of Rhode Island some other songs.
“August” was the tenth studio album by Eric Clapton, released in november 24 1986 by Duck Records/Warner Bros. Records. Produced by himself, Phil Collins and Tom David. In this album is the song: "It's in the Way That You Use It" (co-written with Robbie Robertson, and featured in the Paul Newman-Tom Cruise film "The Color of Money" in October 1986, a month before the album's release, subsequently reaching No. 1. "August" became Clapton's biggest-selling album to date. This sales succes, it bringed the possibility of a live album, 2lp´s, but it never released, because two compilations albums, one on september 1987 “The Cream of Eric Clapton” a greatest hits album, not be confused with the 1994/95 compilations "The Cream of Clapton"; and “Crossroads”,on April 1988, a music collection box set of the work of Eric Clapton released by Polydor Records. were added to the E.C catalog better.
This unreleased live album called: “Eric Claptron and his band live!, Bit.ly/87ECaB contains twelve live songs with a new studio version from “After Midnight”, recording at Power Station Studios, N.Y. U.S. on September 1987. Initially this theme was originally recorded to close this live project, but it ended up being the end of "Crossroads" box a months later. The line-up was:
1. Intro. (1:34)
2. Crossroads. (5:26)
3. White Room. (6:35)
4. Hung Up On Your Love. (5:07)
5. Wonderful Tonight. (5:02)
6. Miss You. (5:33)
7. Tearing Us Apart. (7:15)
8. Holy Mother. (5:42).
9. Badge. (7:27)
10. Let It Rain. (5:39)
11. Layla. (9:08)
12. Further On Up The Road. (5:23)
13. After Midnight. (4:07) (*)
Royal Albert Hall London, UK. GB. Jan 10 (6 & 8),11 (7) (1,2,3,4 & 11).1987.
Civic Center Providence, RI .Rhode Island US April 26.1987. (5).
Madison Square Garden New York , NY. U.S. April 27.1987. (9 ,10 & 12).
(*) Recorded at Power Station Studios, N.Y. U.S. Sept.1987.
This project was not forgotten, decades after,  in november 2015 was released "Slowhand at 70 – Live at the Royal Albert Hall" recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall on 21 May 2015 during his "70th Birthday Celebration" tour. A film of the concert was released on 14 September 2015 too.
Enjoy this. See you soon with more and better. I hope.

Renée Armand: "California Lady" - Reconstructed Unreleased 1980 album.

Out of webs or forums specialized in music or people with knowledge of the subject like all of you, it is difficult to identify the artist that I present today: Renée Armand, among other things because her musical career is very short, just a couple of promotional singles and two discs published, but without a doubt her extraordinary voice does not leave unnoticed to those who hear it for the first time. Let's go with this "California Lady" and great album with rare, unreleased, unknown songs, very nice to hear. An excellent compilation that was proposed to be published in 1980.

Renée Armand began her professional career, as a pianist, at seventeen performing with John Handy’s fusion band in San Francisco. By the age of twenty she was discovered by Tony Bennett, mentored by Carmen McRea, So in 1971, she had her first personal success as interpreter of the song "Lost" from the film directed by Stanley Kramer "Bless the Beasts and Children".
Shortly after In the summer of that year, Renée during the recording sessions of the 2nd album of Derek and The Dominos at the Olympic Studios in London she recorded the song::"Gold Devil's Road " (A.k.a: Devil´s Road”), for a possible 1st single, but before this happened, the band separated and the project was canceled. bit.ly/80rnagt For that dates Renée was married with the drummer: Jim Gordon Here´s you find the original full length version and the single version, both unreleased.
March 1972 the songwriters Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn, written the love theme for “The Poseidon Adventure” movie; original version sung by Renée Armand and used in the movie, but not commercially, This theme won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 45th Academy Awards in March 1973.The song was re-recorded by Maureen McGovern and became a hit, when its was release in May. In that special year, Renée recorded another film song: “Take me Home”, for the western “Molly and the lawlees John”. And her 1st lp: “The Rain Book” on A&M Records. with only one single: “Raining in L.A”.

To the next year, she recorded new songs for a possible second album, but only two: “California Lady” & “I can´t see you anymore” were released as promotional singles, in stereo and mono versions. From this same era remains unreleased: “Dirty Sisters” and “It´s All Right”, after were proposed for "California Lady" album.
From 1974 to 1977 Renée Armand put aside her personal career and dedicated herself to collaborating with other artists such as Linda Ronstadt, John Denver or Hoyt Axton. From this last singer two songs are included: “Boney Fingers” and “I dream of highways” .Finally In 1978, she released her second album “In time”, with only single in U.S: (We´re) Dancin´In The Dark / The Bitter Tasle of Wild Thing.
In 1980, while she was on tour with John Denver, A&M Records attempted to re-launch her solo career. it was speculated on with the realization of new album, the 3rd, that was going to be called "California Lady" ,and a selection of unpublished material was made, but the project did not materialize, because René Armand considered that this lp with of old themes was not opportune for its new race. She had joined to Leah Kunkel, the younger sister of Cass Elliot and, Marty Gwinn Townsendand formed a new musical group: "Coyote Sisters" , an American pop-rock female trio, signed to Geffen Records until 1982. After with Morocco Records, a subsidiary of Motown and released their self-titled debut LP in 1984. Lead single "Straight from the Heart (Into Your Life)".
Here´s a reconstruction according to documentation consulted, of what it could be and was not “California Lady”.
Enjoy it my friends.

Jefferson Airplane: "After Bathing At Baxter´s" - Aborted version.

In this occasion, we take a leap back and return to the happy and glamorous 60s, specifically to 1967. Year that marked the highest point at which popular music could reach not only in that prodigious decade but possibly the century, due to the amount of revelation artists as The Doors, Jimi Hendrix Experience o The Elvis return. The Monterey International Pop Festival or the mythical albums like a: “Sgt.Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band”; or what could have been and was not: “Smile”.
Ok.., in short, we would not stop adding more and more things, but the space that I must submit to is limited, I don´t want to bore to you. Let me say one more thing: 1967 was called: the year that revolutionized music forever. let's go with the week's lp, cd or tape whatever you want to call it.

From October 1967, I rescued the third work of Jefferson Airplane, 2nd with the singer Grace Slick, "After Bathing At Baxter's", bit.ly/67JABAX "baxter" was the band's code for the psychedelic drug LSD or "acid",and the title as a whole translates to "After Tripping On Acid"; The recording sessions started on June until October at The Rca Victor Studios, Hollywood Ca. The album was released on November 27.1967, with Al  Schmitt as producer.
The first single was a song written by Paul Kantner called: ""The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil", recorded live on the Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, Ca, but was, edited and remixed with differents over-dubs added later; released on August, with "Two Heads" on B side. In principle this song was going to have two versions: one edit (4:30) and another of more than 12 minutes that would be located on the 2nd side, along with an unnamed coda, after known as::"A Small Package of Value Will Come to You, Shortly". The second single was: "Watch her ride / Martha". on  November.
From this album has been said it was not well structured, that the October version was superior and much better in terms of content, In a few words, they spoiled it by trying to make it too psychedelic; something that the group took into account when ordered their next work: "Crown of Creation".
It is inexplicable how tunes as good as "Things are better in the East" were eliminated, just because by some band´s members it was a too personal subject of Marty Balin; while other songs like a: "Spare Chaynge" was included,, when this instrumental did not really added nothing, very psychedelic but absolutely dispensable; this long jam appeared on the album, thanks to sacrifice the full length version of. "The Ballad of You & Me & Pooneil", by the single edit of 4:29. This Marty Balin´s song was meant to be a single with "Don't Let Me Down" on the opposite side. Another theme eliminated and sent to the trunk of the old tapes. Both songs recovered decades later in 1993 on the box set "Loves You". These are some of the reasons why this experimental album was significantly less successful than its predecessor from a commercial standpoint.
For the first time you will listen: "Won't You Try", without "Saturday Afternoon". Mix rejected and that was going to appear on the Japanese promotional Lp, but finally not used. From that foreign edition, I have taken the alternate original cover art made by Keiichi Tanaami. You will also find the original English cover made by Ron Cobb but, without the red and blue stripes and white stars,, so you can choose which of them you like the most. Here is the early and not very well-known version elaborated in October of 1967, which should have been published. Judge.

Side A: (19:18)
A: The War Is Over:
1.-Martha.(3:26)
2.-Wild Tyme (H).(3:06)
B: Hymn To An Older Generation:
3.-The Last Wall Of The Castle.(2:38)
4.-Rejoyce.(3:58)
C: Shizoforest Love Suite:
5.-Two Heads.(3:15) (*)
6.-Don´t Let Me Down.(2:52) (*)
Side B:(21:03)
D: How Suite It Is:
1.-Won´t You Try.(2:04) (*)
2.-Watch Her Ride.(3:10)
E: Streetmasse:
3.-The Ballad of You & Me & Pooneil.(12:29) (*)
4.-Things Are Better In The East.(3:18) (*)
(*) Rejected song or version on the final album mix.
It is clear that if they had respected this "setlist", the album would have won a lot and without a doubt would have been almost at the height of "Surrealistic Pillow".
Enjoy, see you soon, with more and better..

Blondie - "Blondie Live!" - The lost 1980 live album - Original master tape.

On September 23, 1978, Blondie released their new and awaited studio album "Parallel lines". However, the promotional tour had already started a month earlier in London, Europe on August 24 and continued through Sweden, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, France to finish, after 26 concerts where they had started, in U.K on November 10 with a big success.
Three days later the new North American tour began at Hollywood and Main, Flushing, NY,  while the third single:"Hanging on the phone", went straight to the top
During the "Parallel lines" tour, a team sent by the famous radio program: "The King Biscuit Flower Hour", recorded with a mobile unit a concert in Philadelphia on December 6, 1978 to be broadcast a few weeks later. The success of that emission, made that the radio station asked again for permission to record another concert, this time on the summer tour, at the second American leg. Dallas was the site chosen.
“The King Biscuit Flower Hour• was an American radio program presented by Bill Minkin, broadcasted on Sunday nights from 1973 until 1993, that featured concert performances by various artists and Rock Bands. The emission continued from 1994 until 2005, but with old programs.
Time after Chrysalis Records requested the masters tapes of both concerts to set up a live album whose publication date, in principle, would be February, 1980 with the provisional name of: "Blondie Live!"., whose result was:

But in its place Chrysalis Records published better the single "Atomic / Die Young Stay Pretty".and "Blondie live!" was momentarily archived. The company executives decided to publish "Blondie Live!" Bit.ly/81bLlD at the end of the "Autoamerican" tour.,whose last concert was at Arena di Verona, Verona, Italy on September 21.1980, but the band went into a severe crisis, partly by the frenetic pace of work that they had since years ago. In view of this;,with the convincement that the group would dissolve soon, they changed the plans and published: "The Best of Blondie",on October 31 instead of "Blondie Live!".
Blondie took to the market their last album: "The Hunter" on May 1982, after which they decided to take a break from their musical activity, too much long, because it took them almost two decades to return in February 1999. Their last concert from this first part since its foundation on 1974 as "New Wave" band, was in Philadelphia at JFK Stadium on August 21.1982.
The master tapes slept into the archives for years, until 1996, when this unreleased work were revised by the producer Cheryl Pawelski, who redesigned the original project expanding it from 11 to 15 songs, for a commemorative limited edition re-named as: "Picture This Live", and only for United States. One year after for Europe as: Blondie Live! Philadelphia & Dallas.

Enjoy it, and see you son.

Patti Smith Group - Retrospective - Unpublished 1983 album

On May 17, 1979, "Wave" was released, an album with which Patti Smith Group said goodbye as a band. They gave their last official concert on September 10, 1979 at the Comunale Stadium, Florence ,Italy.
After that, Patti Smith, got married with her boyfriend, the former guitarist of the Detroit rock band: MC5, Fred "Sonic" Smith, to whom she had dedicated two songs on the album "Frederick" and "Dancing Barefoot". Patti already alone, without her old band, gave three more performances, between June 1980 and October 1981, before saying goodbye to her fans, with no return date, to be a mother and to dedicate herself to the family.

The years went by without new material, but in 1983 the spoken single : "7 Ways of Going / Fire of Unknown Origin" was released with the participation from old friend: Lenny Kaye, who had been produced the Patti single ("Hey Joe / Piss Factory") in 1974; and had been part of "Patti Smith Group" between 1975 and 1979; at which time there was speculation about a hypothetical return of the band. That rumor brought plans for possible retrospective album and more when Arista Records published a promotional single with these line-up: :“Because The Night”, “Redondo Beach”, “Dancing Barefoot” and “Free Money”; something that was denied shortly after by Patti Smith, who was living in Detroit with her family and .Lennyhe was not interested either, because involved in other projects, such as musical producer, with future music stars as Suzanne Vega and her 1987 hit "Luka".
About the possible 1983 retrospective album ,out of the promotional EP, it never said more. Patti had one more child in 1987 and it seemed that her musical career it was a simple memory , but what nobody supposed is that Patti had been written new songs for her next album: "Dream of life" and "People have the power" hit,  was ready.
