Marvin Gaye - "Love Man" - Unreleased 1979/80 album

1979 was the descent into the underworld of Marvin Gaye from which he never returned. Where the career and the personal life of the singer entered into a spiral that marked the path of no return to its sad end. despite the success achieved in 1982/83 with his last studio album. Addicted to cocaine use and stormy relationships with their women, the rise of stars like Prince made his last years the worst nightmare ever dreamed.

After the failure of his previous work: "Here My Dear", published on December 1978; described as “bizarre” and not comercial. With only two singles :“A Funky Space Reincarnation" and "Anger", the last one published at the end of the summer, Marvin started to working on a new studio album, called “Love Man”.

As a preview to the album, a first single was published on september 17: “Ego Trippin´Out”, a slightly autobiographical disco song in which he explained as his ego was larger than life. The song was supposed to be the leading track off Gaye's next album, was recorded at his personal studio. It debuted on the Tv program Dinah Shore's Dinah & Friends; but was not a success, and this caused losses, also a $4.5 million tax bill made matters worse in the singer´s life.

Marvin had to interrupt the production of the album and go on tour to recover money. The new tour without any lp to promote, started on September 22 at at Front Row Theater, Highland Heights, OH, USA. Between the show in Japan at Banpaku Hall on November 14 and the next at Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA, USA on December 29, Marvin tried finishing his “Love Man” project; Bit.ly/79MG80 but after hearing a mix at Sea-West recording studios in Honolulu, Gaye shelved the album, fearing his music career was over; because some of the songs were too obvious and raw about his decadent personal situation.

Finally he abandoned the tour too, and the demands of the promoters for breach of contract, worsened his situation. Gaye's lawyer advised him to file for voluntary bankruptcy, later resulting in the shutdown of his recording studio, which further depressed Gaye. Also the divorce of his wife and the accusation of mistreatment with the next, sank him further. All this led him to attempted suicide by snorting an ounce of cocaine.

Time after, the concert promoter:Jeffrey Krueger got contact with Gaye, to start a European tour, which took place in 1980, featured performances in Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland and England.

Scared of a possible arrest warrant for avoiding the IRS, decided to settle in London. There began to reevaluate the Love Man album with a different concept. Who cared about competing with Michael Jackson and Prince?. He was the sex king. The recording sessions for his new concept for the album began at London's Odyssey and George Martin's AIR Studios.Songs that Gaye had recorded while in Los Angeles and Hawaii changed from their original approach and titles.

"Far Cry" was the only new song with the instrumental "Nuclear Juice", also made new mixes of: "Ego Tripping Out" at Air Studios..

In December 1979, without knowledge Marvin Gaye, the master tapes were stolen by  bassist Frank Blair, and delivered to Motown's Hollywood offices. They remixed the album and published it before Marvin could do anything. “Love man” now re-titled: “When In Our Lifetime”, it became the sixteenth studio album in the singer's musical career; was finally released on January 15, 1981.  

The singer did not want to continue with his old company. and signed in March 1982 with CBS, who bought the rights of Marvin Gaye to Motown In October, released his last studio album: “Midnight Love”,followed by a successful world tour.

This Long Play was certified triple platinum in the United States, selling well over six million copies worldwide. The NME named it as Album of the Year in 1983; and Mr. Gaye was nominated for a 1984 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

But the bad luck that had accompanied him in recent years did not leave him, a day before his 45th birthday, he was killed by his father of several shots.

The Rolling Stones: "Cosmic Christmas".

"Cosmic Christmas" was the provisional title of the third album of The Rolling Stones in 1967 published in December, after: "Between the buttons", whose inspired and beautiful cover did not honor its content; and the compilation “Flowers” released in United States of America in June by London Records.

And it was precisely the limited success of “Between the buttons” that led the group to experiment and get carried away by psychedelia, creating a misunderstood masterpiece: "Their Satanic Majesties Request" (TSMR); darkened and bad compared with "Sgt.Peppe'rs Lonely Hearts Club Band".

An album completely opposite to its traditional sound, where the abundance of unconventional instruments, sound effects and string arrangements, present us with an unusual, unexpected work but with great classics such as: "She's A Rainbow" or "2000 lights years from home". Following the album's release, the Rolling Stones abandoned this psychedelic style for a stripped-down return to their roots in Rock and blues music.

The recording sessions for TSMR began on February 9 at Olimpic Studios in London until the 24th of the same month, with the first shots of "In Another Land" under the title of "Bill's tune" & "2000 lights years from home" as "loose woman", and other topics that did not come to anything like: "Blues 1 & 3"; "Dust My Broom"; "Title 5, 9 & 10" and, "Troubled in mind" with Brian Jones recording at the same time his “A degree of murder” soundtrack.

The new sessions at the Olympic studios did not take place until May 17. After the March / April European tour that ended on the 17th in Athens, Greece; a few days later  in Germany ocurred the premier of “A a degree of murder”, with Anita Pallenberg as protagonist. This time they started working on "She's A rainbow", under the title: "Flowers in your bonnet” ; and "We love you" under the title of "Old King Cole", other themes that did not reach anything either: "Telstar" & "Manhole Cover"

Before Brian leaving to California,mid-June, to present in concert to: The Jimi Hendrix Experience" at the Monterey International Pop Festival and later Mick and Keith with Keith Moon and Eric Clapton, among other guests, participated in the TV special "Our World" with the Beatles with "All You Need Is Love";The Rolling Stones left engravings: "Citadel" and "Dandelion". But it was during the month of July when the album took shape, where the rest of the songs that were part of it were recorded.

After finishing the last session on the 22nd, the sound engineers: Glyn Johns and Eddie Kramer made a first acetate Bit.ly/RS67cm  with an alternative order and only eight songs instead of the ten that the album contains, apparently designed to be, at that time, a double EP, in line with what the Beatles would do later with MMT. This double EP was like that:

...but the problems with justice modified the plans and two of the themes were anticipated in single: "We love You / Dandelion", each with its promotional films recorded on July 30 and 31.

A new acetate, already in LP form, was made on September 15, with the final order of the songs, after finalizing the last arrangements on "2000 lights years from home"; the new album title was "Their Satanic Majesties Request"; taken from the phrase: “Her Britannic Majesty requests and requires. ..”; text that appears inside a British passport. The album was released in South Africa and the Philippines as "The Stones Are Rolling", because of the word "Satan" in the title.

In this new and final version, "Cosmic Christmas" became to a hidden coda  (following "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)"), Wyman says in a slowed-down voice: "We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, and a happy New Year!'" The work was terminated. 

The original cover, showed a photograph of Jagger naked on a cross, but was scrapped by Decca for being "in bad taste". In it´s placed appeared this beautiful and , popular photo, shown in the first editions with the three-dimensional technique.The original cover design called for the lenticular image by Michael Cooper to take up the entire front cover,but finding this to be prohibitively expensive it was decided to reduce the size of the photo and surround it with the blue-and-white graphic design.and On the back cover,a painting by Tony Meeuwissen depicting the four elements (Earth, Water, Fire, and Air). In the inner-cover there is a labyrinth, but no exit,.so do not try to solve it

The Beatles - "Magical Mystery Tour".(Original Motion Picture Soundtrack).

Here I bring you a new version, different from the soundtrack of "Magical Mystery Tour" that I put about a year ago improved, corrected and with the themes that were actually included in the film; but not all for two reasons. or I have not found them or the quality was not good. 

I have divided it into two parts, following the pattern of “Yellow Submarine Lp” Side A is dedicated to the Beatles and the other to instrumental themes, except the song that closes the album. The soundtrack would be divided like this:

With just a couple of days of separation between the end of the sessions of the "Sgt.Pepper", on April 21, began the Magical Mystery Tour sessions. So on April 25, in Studio 3 of Abbey Road, while working on the 2nd (control room monitor mixes) in the final cuts of the album "SGT.PLHCB", the first 3 takes of the song that would give name to the album, EP and movie, were recorded.

1967, is recognized, in the history of the group, as the one of its greater creativity, the zenith of its race and also the one that would mark the beginning of the end, by two punctual facts; the death of his mentor Brian Epstein on August 27 and the fiasco of the premiere on BBC-TV of ​​the film MMT; where the general public realized that The Beatles were not infallible, they made mistakes.

During this time, the second "grace period", from the end of "Sgt.PLHCB" to the publication of EP MMT, with part of the songs included in the telefilm, the Beatles recorded some of the most popular and successful songs: "All You Need is Love", written for "Our World", a special program that inaugurated satellite broadcasts, an appearance that could be seen in 30 countries simultaneously with an audience of some 400 million viewers. It was June 25, 1967, a date to remember. After which the Beatles took a deserved vacation until August 22, when they returned to the studios, but this time to the "Chappel Recording Studios" in London, because the usual Abbey Road, were momentarily occupied by other artists , so with "Your Mother Should Know", Unfortunately, this return to work brought with it very bad news, the death of Brian Epstein.

Still shocked by Brian's sudden disappearance, on Tuesday, September 5 at Studio 1 on Abbey Road, they recorded 16 Tk´s of "I Am Walrus", followed in successive days by "The fool on the Hill", "Blue Jay Way"  and "Aerial Tour instrumental - working title of" Flying ", and its corresponding reductions and mixes in monaural and stereo.

The second and last phase began on Monday, October 2, with 14 Tk´s from "Hello, Hello - working title " Hello Goodbye "and eight of "Shirley Wild Accordian ", on Thursday, October 12; along with more remixes that They spread throughout the month and the following .

The single "Hello Goddbye / I Am Walrus", published on November 24, followed by the Ep "MMT", on Friday, December 8, almost put the end point to a successful and incredible year of not having existed the film to premiere at the BBC, and of course the disappearance of Brian. 

The film, supposedly a comedy, devised by Paul McCartney, began filming on September 11 until the 25th. The Beatles and a group of invited artists toured different parts of the U.K, the so-called "West Country", visiting Devon and Cornwall, as the old RAF air base (West Malling) in Kent; although there were other scenes recorded in Nice,France, for "The Fool on The Hill" and the song of the "striptease" in London.

After reviewing the more than 10 hours of material, a film was mounted that after several reductions was in 52 minutes, a movie made for television that was the most "in" of the moment turned out to be the most grotesque, although supposedly it promised, since the own Staley Kubrick lent some scenes discarded of the still to release "2001: a space odyssey", in "flying".

Broadcast by the BBC on December 26, 1967 in black and white, and a few days later in color for the second channel, it accumulated so many negative reviews that the North American television channels deprogrammed its broadcast and could only be seen a projection of it in New York in the Fillmore East during 1968 and in special pass. Falling into oblivion until the year 1974, in which he was rescued for certain passes by the United States due more to the curiosity and morbid aroused by this damn movie.

Prior to the completion of the EP, Capitol Records released an Lp with the same title to the American market; on the A side were the songs conceived for the film and on the B part of the material only available on singles, such as "Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane", "All You Need Is Love / Baby You're Richman" and Hello Goodbye ",whose publication the Beatles authorized. But not the previous original soundtrack, where apart from the music of the Beatles, some in adapted versions, included other additional themes. 

This side opens with an extract of "Aerial Instrumental Tour", working title of "Flying" and that has also been called "Jessie's dream", without really being, but which are associated with each other because this extract appears during a psychedelic dream of this "happy fat woman". The novelties of this version follow on this side with the complete and stereo mix of the real piece of "Jessie's dream", something that it has cost me a while to find, but here it is.  

The next two tracks "She loves you" and "All my Loving", are not those of George Martin and his orchestra, here are performed by George Irwin & Sons, taken from EP: “Irvin's 89 Key Marenghi Fair Organ Plays Lennon and McCartney -  EP Decca DFE8635 (1965)” - released in U.S by Northern Songs 1964).bit.ly/67BTMmt And “All My loving” is performed by Arthur Wilkinson and his Orchestra) taken from the EP: “Beatles Cracker-Ballet”,EMI Records 1965. “Zampa Overture” is performed by The G.U.S Fottwear Band.

Finally, “Shirley´s Wild Accordion”, theme from Lennon & McCartney, recorded: October 12, 1967 by Shirley Evans, Reg Wale, Paul and Ringo for the "MMT" film, but not used in it. Shirley Evans does play some accordion in the film.

And the non-instrumental theme that will close the album and that you already know is: “Death Cab For Cutie”. (Vivian Stanshall / Neil Innes) Performed by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band; taken from the LP: “Gorilla”, released by Liberty Records,october 1967.

There are a couple of tracks to include that I have not found as: “Bullfight music (unknow artist); or the quality was not right: John Philip Sousa piece and “The Vogla Boatmen”. I hope someday find.

Jimi Hendrix - "Midnight Lighting" "Master Reel - wiped version".

The same story that “Crash landing”; a new posthumous compilation album by Jimi Hendrix (the sixth after his death in September 1970); released and produced by Alan Douglas and Tony Bongiovi. Here, Douglas continued the controversial methods he had adopted on “Crash landing” and brought in many of the same sessions musicians to overdub parts of songs.

The only original recording (apart from those by Hendrix) was Mitchell's drumming on "Hear my train a comin". In response to the previous outcry from fans and critics, Douglas did not claim co-writer credit for any songs on Midnight Lightning. Despite the fact that the album included reworkings of the popular live songs "Hear My Train" and "Machine Gun". Eliminating the original contributions made by Billy Cox on bass and either Mitch Mitchell or Buddy Miles on drums.

Released in November 1975 by Reprise Records in the United States and Polydor Records in the United Kingdom; the album was not as well received as its predecessor, peaking at number 43 in the US.and number 46 in the UK.

Here it shows for the first time the totally clean takes as were recorded in his day by Jimi Hendrix, bit.ly/noV75Jm with the original  order with which the master tapes were established in 1975. How result of this new reconstruction that I bring you, a double Lp has come out, whose last side is the two existing stereo mixes of "Machine Gun". The cover photo for "Midnight lighting" lp was taken on Saturday, 30 May 1970 in Berkeley at the Berkeley Community Theatre. But the image it was retouched in 1975, to look like a drawing.This is the rejected alternate cover for the original album.

The Who: "Rock is dead-long live Rock!". (2nd part).

After reviewing each and every recording session The Who made between the months of May to August 1972; I do a lots of combinations. Finally I have needed  two versions to tell this new story on my website. Both versions are equally valid and possible.So I thought,., why not both?. Ok!.., here we go again with one more unreleased album from The Who,

Not the last sure!.

Why two versions?. Because there were two real possibilities to present the album.

1.- Placing a mini opera on one side of the disc, approximately as shown in the first version, which was  to be called: “Rock is Dead” or ”Cut my hair” too; with the rest of the tracks in the other side. songs destined to be singles hits; but I have preferred to follow the order of the acetate always.

Two versions with differences between the same songs (see booklet)., Let me I'll refresh the memory.., 16 December 1971, The Who just finished their last world tour promoting:“Who's Next”. After a prolonged vacations, in which the creative activity is not lost, by example John Entwistle recording his second solo album "Whistle Rymes" or Pete Townshend prepare new songs to start the new project : “Rock is Dead-Long Live Rock ". Another conceptual album that talks about life within a rock group, in which they reflect themselves. even though he promised not to embark on something similar again after the experiences of "Tommy" and the absolute failure of "Lifehouse".

The sessions begin at Olympic Studios on May 19 and continue until June 8, where most of the demos recorded by during the months of April and May on the acetate will came true, these are: "Relay"; "Love reign O'er me"; "Long Live Rock"; "Is it in my head?"; "Put the money down" and "join together". Others, such as "Get inside" or "Can't you see I'm easy" remain equal, but when the project, it is about to be completed, stops because it is very similar to the previous “Who´s Next”. 

The final decision to finish or not the album with a possible special tv program over the group, it´s postponed until the end of European summer tour, wich last concert will held in Rome on september 14. After this last date: Glyn Johns talks to Pete Townshend, and say him: “there is still time to save it with a couple of songs more and to publish it throughout October”. Pete returns to his home studio and made new tunes with a view to completing it, but instead, seeing that the concept once again expands, a few days after, ends up canceling it “Rock is dead-long live Rock". “Quadrophenia” is on the way…

Until here the quick story.., now let's talk about the reconstruction..,Let's clarify things about 1st version: to rebuild "Rock is dead" or ”Cut my hair” mini opera, whatever you want to call it; I inspired, not copied, because I have completely redone it, in the one shown on the web "albums that never were", it has served as a reference. eliminating everything that might sound like "Quadrophenia"; leaving the versions how they sounded in the demos made between May and July 1972, Removing, by example: ”Is it me?” that does not appear. With “Relay”• first and “Long Live Rock” after. 

Side B continues with the line of the acetate, therefore there´s only one change, the demo:"Can't you see I'm easy" leaves its place to "Naked Eye" (1st mix), because it was a candidate to appear on the disc bit.ly/Llr1W72 and in that same place, when the album was revised in september. To complete a edit version of “Wasp-man”. 

The album´s cover is another modification over the Jon Hunt's original design "I design albums covers"; where the boys were photographed in 1972 and not during 1976; but equally superimposed over one photo taken on St.James Cemetery, South of the Avon. About 2nd version;I included all the songs recorded by the group during the months of May to June at Olympic Studios.

In addition to the two discards from "Lifehouse / Who's next": "Let's see action" & "Time waits for no man", recorded just a year before and published later on single on October 15, 1971. Placed by "Get inside" & "Women's liberation" respectively, because the lyrics have a certain similarity for example, "Time waits for no man" talks about childhood memories of the protagonist as "Get inside".

Finally, "Baby don´t you do it", it´s a live version recorded in San Francisco on December 13, 1971, bit.ly/Llr722wl was the B side of the single "Join together". That´s all. Ok folks!.., choose the most you like and if you choose the two better than better.

Led Zeppelin - "Physical Graffiti" - (Reconstructed Unreleased 2nd version).

Following a well-deserved rest after the New York concerts; shows that ended to the grueling promotional tour of "Houses of The Holy.". Jimmy Page called of the rest of the group to his house in Plumpton, in september of 1973, to begin to shape what would be the following study work: ”Physical Graffiti”, project still without concrete title.

Jimmy wanted a double lp and had two options: a studio album with new songs accompanied by another live record with the recordings of Madison Square Garden, in the style of what Pink Floyd had done years ago in 1969 with "Ummagumma". Or another, completely studio, where he would mix the new themes that already hovered in his head with other unpublished, discards product of other sessions from the times of Led Zeppelin III.

Thus, in November, the first sessions began for the new job at Headley Grange, a former hospice, built in 1795 in East Hampshire (United Kingdom), famous during the 70s for being not only recording studio and essay Led Zeppelin, like other bands such as: Bad Company, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, Peter Frampton, The Pretty Things, Ian Dury or Clover.

But these sessions were interrupted when John Paul Jones got tired of the frantic pace and left the band, to lead a quieter life as organist of Winchester Cathedral although it was officially said that he had fallen ill; part of the investment that had been made in the contracting of the studies was recovered, renting them to Bad Company, while Peter Grant was trying to convince Jones not to leave the group.

In January, the fourth members of  Led Zeppelin returned to the studio for record more material, between that month and the next three, the band recorded and finaliced eight new songs: "Custard pie". "Sick again". "In my time of dying". "In the light" ."Ten years gone". "Kashmir". "The wanton song" and "Trampled under foot". 

At the end of the mix sessions, in July, two different cuts were made from the album; one with these new songs together with the outtakes from past works, which had been given a facelift at Olympic Studios by Mike Harwood; and another, with the best songs from the New York concerts, mixed by Eddie Kramer at the Electric Ladyland studios for the second disc. But when Jimmy Page listened these material opted to postpone the publication of a live album, because the quality it was not all the good that he wanted. In addition, the fact that he temporarily canceled the documentary from the past tour, also influenced in the final decision.

This reconstruction brings you, the original order of the songs, according to the acetate, with three unpublished mixes: "Sick Again", which started with "The Rover", because Jimmy Page had not finished the song and mixed as it was played live, along with two simpler and abbreviated versions of: "In my time of dying" and "In the light", shortened so that do not exceed 26 minutes per side. I also recover the original mixes of "Dazed & confused", "Stairway to heaven" & "Whole lotta love", selected for the live album and rejected by Page.

Although the album was ready in July after the mixes made at Olympic Studios, its publication was not announced to the press until November 1974, because the group decided to postpone its edition until February of the following year, because there were other issues that in one way or another affected its diffusion like the end of the contract with Atlantic, the creation of own record label "Swan Records" or the promised rest that Peter Grant had offered to Jones in exchange for not quit Led Zeppelin.

“Physical Graffiti”, considered the best double album in history of all times , Bit.ly/75LzPG went on sale on February 24, 1975 in the US and a day later in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world, coinciding with the first dates of his new world tour that had already begun on January 11 in Holland and that would end in November, the album became number one, staying in this position for six weeks in a row.

Finally, the artwork: two were selected by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, both made by Mike Doud & Peter Corriston: that of the façade of building No.96 from St.Marks Street in New York and another one of Mount Machu-Pichu.
